In Jaipur on Saturday, a toxic hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas leak hit the Rawatbhata Heavy Water Plant, shattering the silence that often surrounds nuclear facilities. Five workers were hurt, and the incident has sparked calls for a swift investigation and stronger safety measures.
The leak happened while crews were busy on site work. General Manager P. Satish says the gas burst unexpectedly, and every affected person was rushed straight to the hospital. Two workers—one departmental employee and one contract worker—were sent to Kota Hospital for advanced treatment. The remaining three are in the Nuclear Power Plant Hospital, where doctors are monitoring their recovery.
Contract worker Dharmendra Lohar, a resident of Bhainsrodgarh, was reported in critical condition and has been moved to Kota for life‑saving care. Meanwhile, a soldier stationed at Tower No. 11 suffered eye irritation and swelling from the exposure.
The site was quickly secured by local officials. DSP Kamal Prasad Meena, Tehsildar Vivek Garasiya, Police Station Officer Raisal Singh and other law‑enforcement officers arrived after the news broke. Despite the heavy smoke and the roar of alarms, site managers claim the situation is now under control—though the exact cause of the leak remains unknown.
“Two people were injured and are undergoing treatment,” SDM Kriti Vyas told reporters after speaking with the General Manager.
Hydrogen sulfide is notoriously dangerous. Even small amounts can irritate eyes, make the throat burn, cause nausea and vomiting, and in higher concentrations may lead to unconsciousness or death. Because of its flammability, any release in a plant setting can be catastrophic.
Local workers and residents are demanding a full inquiry and accountability. They say repeated safety oversights may have led to the leak, and they want assurance that workers will not face similar risks again. So far, the plant administration and district authorities have yet to issue an official statement, leaving the community in a state of uneasy anticipation.
Investigators are continuing the probe into the leak’s root cause. As the story develops, the focus remains on protecting the plant’s staff, the community around it, and the environment from a silent but deadly threat.
