Police in Jhalawar, Rajasthan, scored a big win against organized crime this week. They smashed the infamous Hemraj Suman gang and arrested 13 members, including one woman, after months of tracking their shady operations.
The gang pulled off a range of crimes, from insurance fraud and honeytrap extortion to smuggling arms and drugs. Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar shared that it all kicked off on September 24, when a Kotwali Intelligence Officer tipped off authorities with a secret report on the group’s activities.
Here’s how their main scam worked: The criminals financed tractors and big vehicles using the names of poor farmers. Then they wrecked the vehicles on purpose and filed fake theft reports to pocket huge insurance payouts—lakhs of rupees each time.
Hemraj Suman, a 44-year-old history-sheeter from Sarola village, led the pack. His crew included buddies from Uttar Pradesh and other spots. To nab them, police hatched a smart plan under SP Kumar and Assistant SP Chiranjilal Meena’s guidance. They sent nearly 20 teams to raid hideouts in Jhalawar, Jhalrapatan, Sarola, and even Kota.
The searches turned up damning evidence: a police uniform and shoes, wooden pipes, a typed-up fake rape complaint, passbooks, cheque books, forged vehicle documents, property papers, and bogus number plates. They hit gold at Hemraj’s Swift Dzire car and his house in Dadiya, uncovering links to multiple frauds and blackmail plots.
Beyond the insurance tricks, the gang ran honeytrap schemes where female members lured powerful people into traps. Once hooked, they’d threaten victims with phony rape accusations, even dressing up in stolen police gear to make it scarier. They also forged documents, sold vehicles illegally, and smuggled drugs and weapons across borders.
Those arrested include gang boss Hemraj Suman, plus Murari Lal Suman, Sitaram Meena, Seema Meena, Riyaz Pathan, Sohail Khan (aka Ghasit), Mohammad Farooq Khan (aka Monu), Yogendra Singh, Lekhraj Bhil, Purushottam Mali, Aman, Tosif, and Kalu (aka Kamal Meena).
Cops believe 20 to 25 more crooks from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh tie into this network. Hemraj and his crew already face dozens of serious criminal cases. Early probes suggest they might have trashed hundreds of tractors in areas like Jhalawar and Baran as part of their insurance fraud racket.
A Special Investigation Team, headed by Deputy SPs Harshraj Singh Khareda and Prem Kumar, is digging deeper now. This bust could unravel even more of the Hemraj Suman gang’s web of crime in Rajasthan.
