Rajkot’s city buses will run free for women on Bhai Beej, the festival that celebrates the special bond between brothers and sisters. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) made the announcement on Sunday and says the offer will go live on all routes this Thursday.
Around 54,000 people use Rajkot’s public transport every day. Of those, roughly 24,000 commute on city buses and 30,000 ride the bus rapid transit system (BRTS). Once the festival arrives, women can hop on any of the 206 city buses or 32 BRTS buses without buying a ticket. The move is part of RMC’s annual tradition of easing travel for women during holidays.
The city’s population is nearly 3.38 million, with women making up just over half (about 1.83 million). That means a large portion of Rajkot’s 54,000 daily public‑transport users are women, making the free‑ride offer welcome news.
Bhai Beej is celebrated on the second day of the Kartik month. According to legend, Lord Yama visits his sister Yamuna on this day. She marks his forehead with a tilak and prays for his long life and happiness—a ritual that has become a staple in many Indian homes.
Gujarat’s bus network, largely run by the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC), is one of the country’s biggest. GSRTC operates about 8,300 buses that make roughly 41,000 trips a day, covering more than 99 % of the state’s villages and population. The state’s fleet totals around 92,000 buses, including both public and private operators.
With the free‑ride program on Bhai Beej, the Rajkot Municipal Corporation aims to honor the festival’s spirit while making travel easier for women across the city. Whether you’re a daily commuter or visiting for the holiday, the offer should help you save a few rupees and enjoy a smoother ride.
