In Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma paid tribute to legendary Assamese actor Nipon Goswami on the actor’s death anniversary. The CM posted on X, saying, “Remembering veteran actor Nipon Goswami on his punyatithi today. Through his exceptional acting skills and his passion for taking Assamese storytelling far and wide, he left an indelible mark on our minds and hearts.”
The post sparked a wave of messages from fans, filmmakers, and cultural groups across the state. They recalled Goswami’s role as the “evergreen hero” of Assamese cinema and his lasting impact on the industry.
Born in Tezpur in 1942, Goswami was one of the earliest graduates of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune, where he studied with future stars like Subhash Ghai and Shatrughan Sinha.
He first entered the screen as a child in the 1957 film Piyali Phukan. His breakthrough came with the 1968 hit Sangram, after which he starred in many beloved movies such as Dr. Bezbarua, Ajoli Nabou, Sandhya Raag, Paap Aru Prayashchitta, Manash Kanya and Srimoti Mahimamoyee. Goswami’s natural portrayals made him a household name in Assam.
Beyond film, he acted in television serials, performed in theatre, and mentored younger actors. Known for his calm demeanor and dedication, he remained active in cultural life until his death on this day in 2022 at age 80.
On his anniversary, film associations, fans and cultural bodies set up remembrance meetings and screened his classic films. Social‑media users echoed the chief minister’s praise, calling Goswami “a bridge between the golden past and the promising future of Assamese cinema.”
