In Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav urged people to prioritize road safety, warning that even skipping a helmet can devastate an entire family. He shared this message during a road safety awareness campaign kicked off for the Navratri festival on Saturday.
Speaking to the crowd, Yadav called on two-wheeler riders to make a simple pledge: always buckle up with a helmet. “Road accidents top the list of unnatural deaths in India,” he explained. “Most stem from careless habits like speeding, ignoring helmets, or skipping seat belts.”
Yadav stressed that every responsible citizen should protect their life and loved ones. “Wear your helmet and stick to road safety rules—it’s that straightforward,” he told the audience in Madhya Pradesh.
To drive the point home, the chief minister personally handed out helmets to five riders as a powerful symbol: Manoj Nigam, Sandeep Bisen, Sumit Pradhan, NCC cadet Sanya Siddiqui, and Anjali Singh. He especially targeted young people, reminding them that safety starts with personal choices.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, Indian youth have shone on the world stage in sports, tech, and more, Yadav noted. “In the same way, dodging overspeeding and following traffic rules is a key duty for our young citizens,” he added.
The government is stepping up too, with tools like patrolling squads, check posts, sensor stations, digital fines, speed guns, live traffic cameras, and FASTag systems all working to cut down road accidents. They’ve also rolled out quick-response help lines and the ‘Rahveer Yojana’ program, which rewards anyone who rushes an accident victim to the hospital with Rs 25,000.
Bhopal Police Commissioner Harinarayanachari Mishra shared updates on local efforts. Teams are transforming 37 busy intersections into “left-turn free” zones to smooth out traffic flow. Working with the Bhopal Municipal Corporation, they’re clearing encroachments from key spots.
Mishra highlighted the stark reality: In 2024 so far, road accidents have killed 180,000 people across India and injured 300,000 more. “We need real action on road safety now,” he said, urging youth to strap on helmets, click seat belts in cars, and ease off the gas pedal.
