People in Chennai have taken to social media over the past week, sharing videos and photos of crater‑filled roads, traffic jams, and waterlogged streets. The images have sparked outrage and a growing demand for quicker action from city officials.
Mayor R. Priya responded by saying the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has mapped almost 2,000 pothole hotspots across the city. “Heavy rain is the main cause of these new potholes,” she told reporters. “We’ve already set aside funds to fill them right away, and repair crews are on the road in each ward. A pothole will be patched on the same day it’s found.”
The mayor also announced that motor pumps are being installed in flood‑prone areas to drain water faster and help protect the roads from future damage.
Earlier this weekend, Mayor Priya and the Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, P.K. Sekarbabu, inspected dredging work on the Buckingham Canal in the Royapuram Zone. The minister asked officials to keep the canal clear of waste and to ensure rainwater can flow freely, a critical step as more showers are expected. “The canal sits next to the Otteri Nalla, and water from Ambattur, Kolathur, and Thiru‑Vi‑Ka Nagar pours into it,” Mayor Priya explained. “Dredging is moving ahead, and it’s key to preventing flooding.”
Civic workers also visited neighborhoods like Kalyanapuram and Kalyanapuram Pallam, talking to about 1,000 residents to hear their concerns about local road conditions.
A senior GCC official reported that work crews have already patched 168 spots, and all complaints are being logged and resolved. Meanwhile, the Chennai Traffic Police have identified 115 critical pothole spots—38 on highways, 71 on bus‑route roads, and 12 on inner city roads—and are prioritizing those for repair to keep traffic flowing safely.
With continuous downpours, the city is moving quickly to fix potholes, improve drainage, and avoid further road damage. Residents can expect the pavement to stay smoother as the town tackles the flood‑related pothole problem head‑on.
