On Saturday, the Haryana Government moved Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya to a new post after allegations that he and seven other senior Haryana police officers were involved in the death of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. The order names Surinder Bhoria, head of the Narcotics Bureau, as the new Rohtak SP.

Y Puran Kumar reportedly shot himself at his home in Chandigarh on Oct. 7. In a note he left, he accused eight senior cops—most notably DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and SP Bijarniya—of caste‑based discrimination, targeted harassment, public humiliation and atrocities. His family demanded the immediate arrest of the DGP and the Rohtak SP.

To investigate the case, Chandigarh Police has formed a six‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT, led by Inspector General of Police Pushpendra Kumar, will review the incident under Sections 108 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act of 1989. The police also urge the officer’s family to arrange a post‑mortem promptly.

In a press briefing, Chandigarh DGP Sagar Preet Hooda said the family had expressed grievances and that the investigation is underway. “We spoke with the family and asked them to get the post‑mortem done as soon as possible. They have grievances, and we are working on them,” he added. “The SIT is headed by the IGP and is doing the investigation.”

Earlier the same day, Congress leaders MP Deepender Singh Hooda and Randeep Singh Surjewala visited Y Puran Kumar’s home to show solidarity. Surjewala described the officer’s death as a reflection of the broader problem of caste discrimination in the country.

The Haryana IAS Officers Association also expressed deep sorrow at the tragic loss of IPS Y Puran Kumar, praising his integrity and dedication to public service. ()
