Tiruvananthapuram – A big step in the Sabarimala gold theft case has come as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) seized a large amount of gold from a jewellery shop in Bellari, Karnataka.
Superintendent of Police Sasidharan led the raid. Over 400 grams of gold were recovered from Govardhan’s store. The team also seized gold coins and about ₹2 lakh in cash from the house of key accused Unnikrishnan Potti in Pulimath, Thiruvananthapuram.
Potti remains in custody until October 30 as investigators collect more evidence. The SIT is now expanding its search beyond Kerala, visiting sites in Bengaluru, Bellari, Hyderabad and Chennai to track the stolen gold’s trail.
The team flew in a three‑member squad with Potti to Bengaluru on Saturday, where they examined his city home, the Bellari shop where the gold was allegedly sold, a Hyderabad firm that repaired the temple’s sanctum door panels, and the Chennai‑based Smart Creations, which supplied gold plating for the Sabarimala temple.
Investigators are checking whether the recovered gold matches the amount stolen from the temple’s renovation works. Govardhan, who previously supplied gold for the temple’s sanctum panels, is also under scrutiny, as is former top temple official Murari Babu, who has already been arrested.
The SIT has outlined 10 accused overall, with Potti and Babu among the confirmed. The latest seizure is seen as a crucial link that could unravel the high‑profile Sabarimala gold heist.
