Saurabh Bharadwaj raises concern over adulterated Kuttu Atta

Hundreds of people in Delhi started feeling sick after eating adulterated kuttu atta, the buckwheat flour many use for fasting during Navratri. Aam Aadmi Party leader Saurabh Bharadwaj called out the issue on Tuesday, slamming the government for ignoring food safety while focusing on festival fun.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Bharadwaj shared the alarming news: “Hundreds fell ill after consuming adulterated kuttu ka atta in Delhi. Reports say hundreds showed up at Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital, and some patients arrived at the Burari hospital too.” He added a sharp jab: “Think about it—even the pure food for fasting folks during Navratri has adulteration. And the four-engine government is busy playing dandiya.”

Police confirmed around 150 to 200 residents from neighborhoods like Jahangirpuri, Mahendra Park, Samaypur, Bhalswa Dairy, Lal Bagh, and Swaroop Nagar reported stomach issues, mainly vomiting, after eating the contaminated buckwheat flour. The complaints poured into Jahangirpuri Police Station starting at about 6:10 a.m.

At Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Vishesh Yadav checked the cases and said no one needed to stay overnight. “Everyone who came to the emergency ward got treatment and went home,” he explained. “Nothing turned serious.”

To tackle the food adulteration scare, local cops are spreading the word through neighborhood patrols and loudspeaker announcements, urging shopkeepers, vendors, and residents to stay alert. They’ve also looped in the Food Department for a deeper investigation.

This comes right in the middle of Navratri, the vibrant nine-day Hindu festival kicking off with devotion across India. Devotees fast during this time, often turning to kuttu atta for simple meals like rotis or pakoras since it’s allowed on fasting days. Each day honors a different form of Goddess Durga, blending themes of power, kindness, and smarts. Folks join in with bhajans, garba dances, and dandiya sticks, filling the air with energy and joy.

As Navratri celebrations heat up, this incident highlights growing worries about food adulteration in everyday items, especially those tied to religious traditions in Delhi.
