SC advocate urges CJI take suo motu cognisance of Dharmasthala burials

Supreme Court Lawyer Seeks Urgent Action on Shocking Mass Burials in Karnataka’s Dharmasthala

In a bold move, a Supreme Court advocate has written to Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai, asking him to take suo-motu notice of the disturbing mass burials uncovered in Karnataka’s Dharmasthala. The lawyer wants the ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe placed under the watch of a retired top court judge to ensure fairness and speed.

Advocate Rohit Pandey called this a case of "extraordinary circumstances" in his letter. He pointed out that visible human remains are still lying unexhumed because of pressure from powerful forces, and witnesses are being silenced. "This shocking situation shakes the foundations of justice," he wrote, urging the court to step in right away.

The whole issue blew up on July 3 when sanitation worker C.N. Chinnayya came forward with a bombshell claim. He said he was forced to bury bodies of crime victims over the last 20 years. To back his story, Chinnayya recorded his statement with the police, a magistrate, and even filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court.

The SIT jumped into action and started digging. They found skeletal remains, skulls, and pieces of clothing that match parts of Chinnayya’s allegations. But now, things seem stuck. Pandey warned in his letter that the SIT is facing heavy obstruction. National media reports show pressure building to stop further exhumations, even with clear evidence of human remains in plain sight.

Worse, lawyers helping victims’ families are under attack. Pandey highlighted how Karnataka Police—outside the SIT—are harassing these lawyers. "This is a direct hit on the independence of the legal community and shows a total breakdown in the rule of law in Karnataka," he said.

Pandey is pushing for quick fixes: full transparency in the SIT investigation, protection for witnesses and families, and orders to exhume and forensically test all visible remains. "Only urgent judicial intervention can dig out the truth and protect the dignity of justice," he added.

This case has everyone talking about accountability in Karnataka’s law enforcement and the need for stronger oversight in sensitive probes like the Dharmasthala mass burials investigation. As details emerge, many hope the Supreme Court will act to prevent any cover-up.
