New Delhi, Oct 23 – The Supreme Court today warned witnesses in a criminal case that any attempt to mislead the court will be dealt with sharply. A bench led by Justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and N.V. Anjaria told the trial court to act on its own if a witness lies or tries to influence others.
The court’s remarks came after senior lawyer Vipin Sanghi said that three private prosecution witnesses had turned hostile once a second accused was released from jail. Sanghi implied the release had pushed the witnesses to change their testimonies. The lawyer for the accused, Mukta Gupta, denied that the alleged shift was intentional.
To protect the rest of the evidence, the court ordered that the remaining official witnesses – two doctors and forensic science laboratory officers – must give their statements under full police protection. The court demanded that no intimidation or influence affect those witnesses. Supervising witnesses will receive the court’s instructions before they testify.
The Supreme Court set a follow‑up hearing for December 11. This case highlights the court’s insistence on honesty and fairness in criminal proceedings and its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of witness testimony.
