Heavy Rains Trigger Floods and School Closures in Manipur and Nagaland
Heavy rains and flash floods have hit Manipur hard, forcing the state government to shut down all schools and colleges for a second straight day on Wednesday. Officials announced this decision Tuesday, citing the risky weather in the Imphal valley and other areas. With landslides adding to the chaos, authorities want to keep students safe amid the downpour.
In a big worry for locals, the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal ordered an immediate evacuation of all in-patients from its wards. Water levels surged suddenly around the hospital, putting patient safety at risk. Medical Superintendent Lokeshwar Singh issued the alert, approved by top officials, and banned new admissions until things calm down. The move ensures everyone’s well-being during this flood crisis in Manipur.
Disaster teams report that two key rivers—Iril and Wangjing—have overflowed their banks in the Imphal valley. The Iril river flooded vast farmlands, homes, roads, and bridges in Imphal East district. Meanwhile, the Wangjing river, running above danger levels, has swamped several spots in Thoubal district. Floods in Manipur have isolated many villages, especially after strong currents washed away an iron bridge over the Thoubal river at Yairipok. This cut off road links to areas in Imphal East and Thoubal.
Manipur Fire and Emergency Services jumped into action, rescuing dozens of stranded folks. They moved them to relief centers at Yairipok Khoirom Mayai Leikai in Imphal East, providing much-needed help to those hit by the Manipur floods.
Over in neighboring Nagaland, the story is similar with widespread damage from relentless rains. The Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) shared that from September 8 to 14, heavy downpours sparked multiple landslides and floods. These wrecked homes, roads, bridges, and farmlands across various districts. Even the busy Kohima-Dimapur National Highway saw damage at several points, disrupting travel in Nagaland.
As rescue efforts continue in both states, officials urge people to stay indoors and avoid flooded zones. The heavy rainfall in Northeast India has turned daily life upside down, but teams are working round-the-clock to restore normalcy and support affected communities. Keep an eye on local updates for the latest on Manipur floods and Nagaland landslides.
