Ranjana Roy, the Deputy Magistrate and SDO of Durgapur, told reporters on Saturday that the victim of the Durgapur Medical College gang‑rape case is stable and that her mother is with her. She added that the local police are giving the student full support and that authorities will take swift action.
The alleged crime involved a second‑year medical student from Jaleswar, Odisha. According to the victim’s father, a classmate lured her to a nearby eatery under the pretext of getting a bite to eat. While the student was alone, two or three men burst in and forced her into a sexual assault. The classmate fled the scene. The father later said they called the police at 10 p.m., explaining that “your daughter was raped. We live in Jaleswar, and she was studying here.”
Security at the hostels in Durgapur has been criticized as inadequate, a point the father made during an interview with local reporters. He blamed the lack of a proper system and said no action had yet been taken.
In response, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condemned the incident as “highly condemnable and painful.” In a post on X, he urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to enforce the law and take exemplary action against those accused. Majhi also announced that Odisha officials would cooperate with West Bengal authorities to support the victim’s family.
The Durgapur Medical College gang‑rape case has drawn national attention. Residents and students alike are calling for better campus security, transparent investigations, and a quick legal response to protect victims of sexual violence.
