Bengaluru, India – Karnataka’s Minister of Large and Medium Industries, M. B. Patil, told reporters that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) survey team will finish its report on the best locations for Bengaluru’s second international airport in the next two or three days.
Once the report arrives, the state Cabinet will review it before we vote on a final site. Patil said the AAI might even recommend two possible sites, but the airport builders will still need to check each option’s financial feasibility. “It isn’t a guarantee that the government will build the airport wherever the AAI points,” he said.
The state has begun planning while keeping a 150‑kilometre rule in mind. The rule says no new international airports can open within 150 km of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) until 2033. By starting now, Patil said, the second airport could be ready by that time. Projects of this size usually take five to six years to finish.
Only two other Indian cities – Delhi (Noida) and Mumbai (Navi Mumbai) – have a pair of international airports. Patil confirmed that Karnataka will also look at how the companies that built those airports managed the work. He added that Karnataka is aware of Tamil Nadu’s plan to build an airport in Hosur, near the state border.
When it comes to the site, north‑Karnataka legislators have championed Tumakuru, while others back a location in southern Bengaluru. “We’ll weigh passenger traffic, industrial needs and many other factors,” Patil said. The final decision will rest on merit, convenience and future demand.
Overall, the state government aims to clear the legal and technical hurdles quickly so the new international airport can begin construction soon. With a planned launch before 2033, Bengaluru could become one of India’s major air hubs, easing travel for millions of passengers and boosting economic growth in the region.
