Srinagar, Oct 26 – Senior National Conference (NC) leader and Member of Parliament Mian Altaf Ahmad told reporters in Srinagar that, as Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah must “speak responsibly and with understanding.”
The comments came during the 4th Halla Bolle conclave at a local hotel. Ahmad didn’t agree that Abdullah is on the right track, warning that supporting him could be “advising Omar wrongly.”
All the more, Ahmad said, the Chief Minister’s words have wide consequences. He urged Omar to focus on governance instead of rhetoric. “People want practical solutions, not endless debate,” he added.
Ahmad represents the Anantnag–Rajouri Lok Sabha seat. He’s a powerful religious and political figure among the Gujjar‑Bakarwal community.
In the conclave, he said that since the new government took charge, Jammu and Kashmir has seen “no meaningful political or administrative progress.” He echoed calls for a recruitment drive, noting that many educated youths—postgraduates and Ph.D. holders—remain unemployed. “The recruitment process should have started from day one with ads issued by the agencies,” Ahmad said.
He also backed fellow NC MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, who has criticised the NC government for not keeping its 2024 election promises. When Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary claimed he didn’t know Ruhullah, Ahmad said it was obvious to everyone, and the comment didn’t diminish Ruhullah’s credibility or popularity.
According to Ahmad, Kashmir’s political leaders have lost focus, debating alignment with or against the BJP while ignoring people’s real concerns. He said the Chief Minister should lead on people’s welfare rather than politics alone.
