Several states of North-Eastern India received less rainfall this year, says Met Department

Northeast India Faces Rainfall Shortfall This Monsoon Season

Guwahati, Assam: If you’re in Northeast India, you might have noticed the skies haven’t been as generous with rain this year. From June 1 to September 11, most states in the region got way less rainfall than usual, according to Dr. Sanjay O’Neill Shaw, Deputy Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati.

Speaking to on Friday, Dr. Shaw shared some eye-opening numbers. Meghalaya, known for its heavy downpours, saw a whopping 45% less rainfall than normal. Assam wasn’t far behind with 34% deficit, while Arunachal Pradesh got 40% less. Manipur had 13% less, Mizoram 9% less, and Sikkim 15% less.

Not all states missed out, though. Nagaland actually received 12% more rain than average, and Tripura stayed close to normal levels.

Diving into the details from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reports, Assam’s usual monsoon quota is 1,307.7 mm, but it only got 865.7 mm so far. Arunachal Pradesh normally sees 1,447.7 mm, yet it recorded the same 865.7 mm this time. Meghalaya’s normal is a massive 2,401.4 mm, but it managed just 1,328.5 mm. Manipur got 797.2 mm against its 920.9 mm norm, and Sikkim received 1,252.7 mm compared to 1,466.2 mm expected.

This rainfall deficit in Northeast India could spell trouble for farmers and water supplies, especially in a region that relies heavily on the monsoon for everything from crops to rivers.

The good news? Things might pick up soon. IMD forecasts moderate rain across most parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Nagaland on September 13 and 14. Expect showers at many spots in Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura too. Keep an eye on the weather updates if you’re planning outdoor activities!
