In Durgapur, a city in West Bengal, a 22‑year‑old medical student from Odisha is recovering after a shocking alleged gang‑rape that left her unable to walk. Her father, speaking to on Sunday, said his daughter is currently on bedrest and is receiving medical care.

He voiced worries about her safety in West Bengal and asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to allow the student to be taken to Odisha, where she would be safer. “Here her safety is at risk,” he told the reporter. He praised the Chief Minister, the Director General of Police, the Superintendent of Police, and the District Collector for their prompt support and for keeping him updated on his daughter’s condition.

Police in West Bengal have already arrested three men linked to the crime, according to the Asansol‑Durgapur Police Commissionerate. The incident happened when the student went out with a classmate to get a bite to eat around 8:00‑9:00 p.m. A group of two or three men then attacked her. The classmate fled while the student was raped. The victim’s father described the lack of security at the campus and expressed frustration that an event of such gravity had not yet prompted decisive action.

Deputy Magistrate and Senior Deputy Secretary Ranjana Roy visited the student on Saturday and said she is in stable condition and that her mother is with her. “We are giving her all the support and have assured that action will be taken,” Ms. Roy told reporters.

Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi condemned the incident as “highly condemnable and painful.” In a post on X, he urged West Bengal’s Chief Minister to carry out exemplary action against the accused, in accordance with the law. He also promised that the Odisha government would provide all possible assistance to the victim’s family.

This case has drawn widespread outrage across both states, underscoring the urgent need for improved campus safety measures and swift judicial responses to sexual violence.
