Shimla’s Kalibari Temple Buzzes with Bengali Flavors at Anondo Mela
Shimla in Himachal Pradesh turned into a vibrant celebration spot on Sunday as the 203-year-old Kalibari Temple hosted the annual Anondo Mela. This lively event kicked off the excitement for Durga Puja, drawing the Bengali community together with colorful stalls, tasty treats, and joyful vibes.
Families and locals set up food stalls packed with classic Bengali dishes like sweets, snacks, and savory bites. The money raised from these stalls will help fund the grand Durga Puja festivities coming up soon. Built back in 1822, the Kalibari Temple has served as a key cultural and spiritual center for Bengalis in Shimla for over two centuries, keeping traditions alive in the hills of Himachal Pradesh.
Organizers shared that Anondo Mela does more than just serve food—it’s a heartfelt way to build community ties, spark nostalgia, and gear up for welcoming Goddess Durga. "It’s all about togetherness and devotion," one organizer said with a smile. The temple’s Durga Puja stands out as one of North India’s oldest and biggest, attracting devotees from across Himachal Pradesh and even farther away.
Meanwhile, the famous Kullu Dussehra festival in Himachal Pradesh ramps up the festive spirit. This unique seven-day event starts right after Vijayadashami and unfolds in the stunning Kullu Valley. Women in colorful traditional outfits danced to folk tunes, while men beat the drums with energy. What makes Kullu Dussehra special? It brings together over 300 local deities in a grand procession. The celebrations begin with tributes to the main deity, Lord Raghunath, at his temple. Then, beautifully adorned palanquins carry the gods to the Dhalpur Ground for a massive gathering.
These festivals highlight Himachal’s rich cultural mix, blending Bengali traditions with local Himalayan customs for an unforgettable experience.
