Kochi, Kerala – The Syro‑Malabar Church is urging its members to help with Kerala’s voter list revision. After a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, church leaders sent a circular on Wednesday asking Christians across the state to cooperate with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) that updates voter rolls.
The request comes as the state government held an online all‑party meeting on the same evening. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan chaired the session, and representatives from every political party, except the opposition‑free BJP, agreed to challenge the Election Commission’s SIR process in court.
Fr. James Kokkavayalil, secretary of the church’s Public Affairs Commission, said the circular calls for parishioners enrolled after 2002 to keep the documents required by the Election Commission ready for verification. Church members who live abroad must also make sure their names show up in the rolls. The directive stresses that every eligible voter should help Booth Level Officers (BLOs) during household visits and fill out forms correctly.
The Syro‑Malabar Church, which serves a major part of Kerala’s Christian population, is one of three Catholic churches that answer to the Pope. It is the largest Catholic community in the state.
Prime Minister Modi posted a note on his social media a day earlier that he had a “wonderful interaction with Syro‑Malabar Church leaders,” underscoring the high‑level attention on the issue.
The church’s message is spreading through parish networks and WhatsApp groups, urging all faithful to support the effort to keep the electoral roll accurate and complete.
