SIR in Assam only after official NRC notification: CM Sarma

In Assam, voters will need a clean and reliable roll in time for the 2026 Assembly elections, and the state chief minister said the next step is tied to the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters on Tuesday that Assam can carry out a full‑scale Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of its electoral rolls only after the NRC is officially notified. He expects that notification to come by the middle of next year, after which the SIR can begin.

“Because the NRC hasn’t been issued yet,” Sarma explained, “the SIR cannot start until we have that final document.”

The current voter list has serious problems, he added. Names of people who have died, minors who cannot vote, and married women whose surnames or addresses have not been updated are all still on the roll, undermining its credibility. The SIR would correct these errors.

While waiting for the NRC, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered a Special Summary Revision. This interim step lets booth‑level officials cross‑check pre‑filled registers, update or delete incorrect entries, and flag remaining problems before the more exhaustive NRC‑linked revision takes place.

The ECI said Assam will release the final, revised voter list on February 10, 2026. This date dovetails with the state’s drive toward the 2026 Assembly elections, where every accurate vote counts.

Unlike a routine yearly summary, the Special Summary Revision is a targeted, mid‑level check, scheduled to be more thorough than a simple summary but less intensive than the SIR used in other states. Booth officers will use pre‑filled forms to speed up verification, reducing errors and speeding the overall process.

Assam’s political community watches closely as the government works to ensure the integrity of the electoral database ahead of the 2026 polls.
