In West Bengal’s upcoming elections, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office is rolling out a new two‑tier daily system right after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) notice is published. This change aims to keep the election process smooth and free from delays at the district level.
Once the SIR notification goes live, an additional CEO will meet daily with district magistrates, who double as district electoral officers. These meetings track how each district is handling the revision of voter lists and polling stations. Meanwhile, a few joint CEOs will check in with electoral registration officers (EROs) to see how their areas are progressing. The CEO keeps the entire system under direct watch, ensuring no gaps in communication.
The plan also includes a two‑tier approach for talking to political parties. On one hand, the CEO will host a statewide meeting in Kolkata, bringing all parties together for a broad discussion. On the other hand, district magistrates will hold local meetings with party leaders to focus on district‑specific concerns. This dual setup lets the CEO capture overall party feedback while district offices keep eye on local issues.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has taken extra steps to protect booth‑level officers (BLOs) during the revision. BLOs, who are state government employees, will stay under the CEO’s administration to prevent transfers or extra duties that could sway their impartiality. The CEO also promised that BLOs will receive top‑notch security and that any intimidation will be dealt with strictly. If a BLO faces pressure, they’re instructed to report it directly to the CEO, who will liaise with the ECI headquarters in New Delhi for action.
By tightening daily oversight, improving communication with parties, and safeguarding frontline staff, West Bengal’s election officials are working to keep the Special Intensive Revision fair, transparent, and free from political influence.
