Kolkata — The Election Commission of India has handed out more than 1.73 million voter‑registration forms in West Bengal during the first three days of its Special Intensive Revision (SIR). The massive review kicked off on Tuesday and aims to clear the voter lists ahead of next year’s state Assembly elections.
An insider from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office confirmed that the 1.73 million figure was counted up to 4 p.m. on Thursday. The final number for the day will be released later, but the overall trend shows strong progress.
So far, the Chief Electoral Officer’s office has received 111,469 applications for Booth‑Level Agents (BLAs). These agents help political parties with voter data at the booth level. Of the applications, 110,448 were for BLA‑2 positions, which represent parties at individual polling booths, while 1,021 were for BLA‑1 roles, representing parties at the constituency level.
Party dynamics are clear: the BJP leads with 38,021 BLA applications—37,700 for BLA‑2s and 321 for BLA‑1s. Trinamool Congress follows closely with 35,527 applications (35,364 BLA‑2s, 163 BLA‑1s). The CPI(M) is in third place, filing 29,360 applications (29,160 BLA‑2s, 200 BLA‑1s). The Congress has submitted 7,197 applications, 6,999 for BLA‑2s and 198 for BLA‑1s.
“The SIR is moving forward smoothly and on schedule in West Bengal,” the insider said.
Out of 766,375,529 voters on the state roll as of October 27, 2025, those who were already registered in the 2002 revision simply need to fill out the enumeration forms. They will not have to submit additional documents to keep their names on the roll. Those whose names—or their parents’ names—were missing in 2002 must provide at least one of the 11 documents required by the Commission.
The SIR process is expected to finish by March next year, ensuring all names are verified before the crucial Assembly elections scheduled for 2026.
