In Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh, a train crash on Wednesday morning sent shockwaves through the region when at least six pilgrims were fatally struck at Chunar railway station. The victims had just gotten off a passenger train and were trying to cross to the other platform when the fast‑moving Kalka Mail slammed into them. Officials say the collision happened at 9:15 a.m., leaving the bodies badly mutilated and sent immediately for post‑mortem examination.
Mirzapur GRP inspector Raghavendra Singh explained that the pilgrims had come from Sonbhadra on the Prayagraj‑Barwadih train. They were heading to Varanasi after a holy dip in the Ganga and were moving between platforms when the Kalka Mail, traveling on the adjacent track, struck them. Eyewitnesses described panic and chaos as onlookers rushed to help, while RPF and GRP teams quickly launched rescue and relief operations.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered his condolences and asked officials to provide swift medical care and bring in SDRF and NDRF teams if needed. He also ordered senior staff to arrive on site and supervise the relief effort. As of now, rescue operations are ongoing and the station has been brought under control.
At the same time, news from Chhattisgarh updates the death toll in a separate train accident near Bilaspur railway station to 11. That incident, which took place Tuesday afternoon, involved a goods train colliding with a mainline electric multiple unit (MEMU) local. Several passengers from that crash remain hospitalized.
The two tragedies highlight the urgent need for better safety measures on India’s busy railway network, especially during crowded religious events.
