Tragic Quarry Collapse in West Bengal’s Birbhum Kills Six Workers

In a heartbreaking incident, six workers lost their lives and five others suffered serious injuries after a massive rock collapse at a stone quarry in West Bengal’s Birbhum district. The accident happened on Friday afternoon, turning a routine workday into a nightmare for the families involved.

What started as reports of five deaths and four injuries quickly updated to the grim reality of six fatalities and five hurt, according to the district administration. Eyewitnesses described the chaos: around 12 workers were busy extracting stones from the quarry near Nalhati when a large section suddenly gave way around noon. "They didn’t have a second to escape," one local worker shared with reporters. "The rocks buried them instantly. Colleagues from nearby quarries rushed in to dig them out before help arrived."

Rescue teams pulled five bodies from the debris first, while six injured workers got rushed to Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital. Tragically, one more worker didn’t survive his injuries there. The five survivors are now fighting for their lives—two in critical condition—under close medical watch.

Police from Nalhati station swarmed the site, where tension still hangs heavy. They’re leading an ongoing probe, questioning the quarry owner, and checking for any trapped workers. The bodies went for post-mortem to understand the full story.

This isn’t the first time Birbhum’s stone quarries have made headlines for the wrong reasons. The area is riddled with illegal operations that skip basic safety rules, putting workers at constant risk. Reports also highlight dangers like stockpiles of explosive gelatin sticks used for blasting, adding to the hazards in these unregulated spots.

As investigations continue, questions swirl about how to prevent such quarry accidents in West Bengal. Families mourn, and authorities promise stricter checks on these deadly sites. Stay tuned for updates on this Birbhum quarry collapse.
