Srinagar – Heavy snowfall and landslides on Tuesday shut all major roads in the Kashmir valley. The Srinagar‑Jammu, Srinagar‑Leh and Mughal Roads were blocked, leaving residents scrambling for alternate routes.

Officials said the snowstorm on Zojila Pass and Pir Ki Gali closed the Srinagar‑Leh highway and the Mughal Road. Meanwhile, landslides and falling stones on the Ramban stretch of the Srinagar‑Jammu national highway forced a full closure. Additional routes, such as Sinthan Pass to Kishtwar, Razdan Pass to Gurez, and the road from Kupwara to Tangdhar and Keran, were also shut.

The weather office forecasts light to moderate snow across the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir until this afternoon, with the outlook improving afterward. Temperatures fell sharply: Srinagar’s low hit 7.1 °C, while Gulmarg slid to –0.4 °C and Pahalgam to 0.6 °C. Outside the valley, Jammu recorded a 15 °C low, Katra 12 °C, Batote 6.8 °C, Banihal 5.3 °C, and Bhaderwah 5.7 °C.

Cold winds from the snow‑covered peaks stirred a sharp cold wave across the plain. Residents in cities have pulled on woollens, while villagers in foothill areas are wearing the traditional tweed coat, the “Pheran”.

The early autumn snowfall signals winter’s arrival. Farmers are told to resume their work with the crops they’ve collected after threshing and milling.

Looking ahead, the weather office expects mainly dry conditions for the next week with occasional light showers in some spots. The cold wave is likely to subside as the rain begins, bringing a brief reprieve before summers heat sets back in.
