Chennai, Oct. 21 – The opposition party AIADMK has accused Tamil Nadu’s ruling DMK of stalling a key police appointment to sway the state’s upcoming assembly elections.
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami said the DMK government deliberately left the post of Director General of Police (Law and Order) vacant after the previous DGP’s term ended in August. He added that the Union Public Service Commission had already shortlisted three eligible officers, but Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has not named a successor.
“Stalin is playing with the police’s safety and morale by holding back this crucial appointment for political gains,” Palaniswami told reporters. He warned that keeping the position empty threatens the police’s independence and jeopardises public safety.
The party’s statement slammed the DMK for treating the law‑and‑order role as a political bargaining chip. It called the delay a form of electoral manipulation and said that a police force reduced to “photo‑op props” undermines good governance.
In addition to the appointment dispute, AIADMK criticized the DMK for dismissing democratic dissent inside the state assembly. Legislators from the opposition paraded black armbands to protest a DMK decision, only to see Speaker M. Appavu mock the gesture and MLA Regupathy liken it to a prison uniform.
Palaniswami urged Chief Minister Stalin to appoint a qualified and independent police chief immediately. He argued that Tamil Nadu deserves leadership that values professionalism over politicking and that law, not politics, should guide public safety.
The AIADMK’s criticism comes ahead of the upcoming assembly elections, with the state’s political climate heating up as parties battle for control.
