Heavy rains are still battering parts of Tamil Nadu, but the state’s leaders are on the move to keep the flood‑prone districts protected.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin rolled out of Chennai on Sunday and dropped into the Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority’s (TNSDMA) control room at Ezhilagam. He was there to check how the state is handling the Northeast Monsoon storm and to remind district teams that prompt action can save lives.
During the visit, Stalin also held a video call with district collectors. He told them to move residents out of low‑lying areas immediately and to keep rescue teams working 24 hours a day. The discussion covered the worst‑hit zones, including Theni, where floods have rumbled through roads and homes, and the Delta region where Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam’s Vedaranyam area has been struck hard by nonstop rain.
"Since the monsoon began on October 16, the state has seen an average of 12 mm of rain," the official release said. The heaviest showers hit Kanniyakumari, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai and the Nilgiris districts.
Key priorities that Stalin set for the districts are:
- People‑first safety – Evacuate anyone stuck in flood‑dangerous spots to relief camps without delay.
- Round‑the‑clock relief – Make sure rescue teams and rehabilitation units are always on call.
- Farmers’ support – Keep harvesting operations running and dispatch harvested paddy quickly so farm incomes don’t falter.
- Well‑equipped camps – Each relief site must provide food, clean drinking water, medical care and sanitation so no one has to endure basic shortages.
The TNSDMA at Ezhilagam keeps feeding real‑time data on rainfall and coordinates relief across districts. It has warned residents in vulnerable places—especially Theni, Madurai and Ramanathapuram—to stay alert, as heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the next two days and rivers and dams are filling up.
Officials from Revenue, Public Works, Health and Electricity were in the meeting to help move the plan into action. The state’s commitment shows that drought‑driven agitation of the Northeast Monsoon is being met with swift, coordinated flood relief and infrastructure protection.
