In the bustling town of Karur, Tamil Nadu, families are sharing heartbreaking stories of loss after a deadly stampede at actor and TVK chief Vijay’s campaign rally. The tragedy struck on September 28, claiming several lives, including a two-year-old boy, and leaving loved ones in deep grief.

Vimal, father of little Guru Vishnu, couldn’t hold back tears as he described the horror. “My son went to the rally with his grandmother and some neighbors,” Vimal told reporters. “When Vijay showed up, the lights went out. As everyone pushed closer, the crowd surged out of control. I was stuck at work and didn’t see my phone until evening. By then, someone had rushed my boy to the hospital. Losing him like this—I just can’t put the pain into words.”

The pain runs deep in another family too. Maheswari died while trying to shield her daughters and grandchild from the chaos. Her son Prasanth explained how it happened: “Mom had gone to the temple and paused to catch Vijay’s campaign. She got swept into the stampede. When she reached for my sister and her kid, the crowd pulled her under, and she didn’t make it.”

Maheswari’s daughter, who escaped the crush, relived the terrifying moments through sobs. “I tumbled down near Vijay’s vehicle with my sister. Mom rushed to pull us out, but she got stuck. I couldn’t breathe for over an hour while fighting to get free. Right there, I watched the crowd trample her chest and throat. If help had arrived faster, she might still be with us.”

Her husband, Sakthivel, vented his anger at the rally organizers. “Why pack so many people into such a tiny space? My wife ended up crushed under feet— what’s the sense in all this if lives like hers are lost?”

In response to the Tamil Nadu stampede tragedy, officials stepped in to support the victims’ families. DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Congress MP S. Jothimani, and former Minister V. Senthil Balaji visited the grieving homes. They pledged Rs 10 lakh in compensation to each affected family, offering some solace amid the sorrow.
