In Srinagar on October 17, Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the delay in restoring full statehood to the region is linked to the ruling BJP at the centre. He told reporters in the Kulgam district that he keeps pushing for statehood so his elected government can gain more power.
Abdullah blamed the BJP for the hold‑up, saying the centre “is delaying the grant of statehood for reasons best known to the BJP.” He also confirmed that the long‑running practice of moving the top government offices between Srinagar and Jammu every six months – the so‑called “Darbar Move” – will resume. The move had stopped in 2021 when Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha cancelled it.
Under the new plan, the civil secretariat will close in Srinagar on October 31 and reopen in Jammu on November 3. Every employee who participates in the Darbar Move will receive a relocation allowance of ₹25,000. Abdullah said the government will continue its fight for statehood, hoping the centre could hand it back within a year.
He added that the cabinet’s sub‑committee, headed by Sakeena Itoo, has finished its report on reservation rules. The report is approved, and a cabinet memo will soon go to the Lt. Governor for final approval.
Disaster relief for farmers was another subject of discussion. Abdullah said the government has completed damage assessments for crops affected by a dry spell followed by floods. He is negotiating with the centre for a relief package similar to what other states received and wants the same for Jammu and Kashmir.
Regarding law and order, he said the elected state administration is not yet in full control. “Once we regain those powers, we will fulfil our other promises,” he added.
After his interview, Omar Abdullah toured government stalls set up in Kulgam. The CM’s office shared a post on X saying he met officials and beneficiaries, praising the efforts that keep services citizen‑centric and effective.
Abdullah’s remarks underscore the central issue of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and the ongoing negotiation between the state and the BJP‑led centre.
