In Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, tensions flared up after Friday prayers on September 26 when a group of protesters started pelting stones, leading police to use lathi charges and detain several people involved.
The crowd gathered outside the iconic Ala Hazrat Dargah and the home of Ittehad-e-Millat Council chief Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan. Many held up placards with the message “I Love Mohammad,” voicing their concerns during the demonstration.
Police officials explained that they were carrying out a routine flag march in the area when some troublemakers rushed into the streets, shouting slogans and throwing stones at officers. This sparked the quick response to restore order.
Bareilly Range Inspector General Ajay Sahni shared an update, saying the Bareilly protest situation is now fully under control. “We’ve identified some of the stone pelters and taken them into custody,” he noted. “People took to the streets for the demonstration, but things stayed mostly normal. We’ve talked with everyone since morning, prayers wrapped up smoothly, and most folks headed home. A few kept chanting slogans, and police sent them back right away.”
Authorities captured footage and photos of the suspects for easy identification, and they’re moving forward with actions against them. To keep the peace around the dargah and Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan’s residence, a large police force remains deployed in the area.
More details on the Uttar Pradesh stone pelting incident are expected soon.
