In Delhi’s busy Anand Vihar railway station, thousands of passengers lined up on Saturday to catch trains to the Chhath festival, a key Hindu celebration in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
The Chhath Puja, a four‑day ceremony that began on October 25 with “Nahay‑Khaay,” sees families returning home to worship the Sun God and his sister Chhathi Maiya. Anticipating this surge, Indian Railways step up the service.
At Anand Vihar, travelers enjoyed separate ticket counters and tighter security. Regional Police Force (RPF) officers guided passengers through check‑in and boarding, while both commuters and staff praised the improved facilities. “Everything feels very comfortable—great work from the police and railway teams,” shared Mohan Rai, a passenger. Rajan, heading to Bihar, added, “I’ve never seen such an arrangement; the services are excellent.”
To keep the line moving, the railways added special trains, extra coaches, and several passenger‑friendly measures on key routes. A round‑trip Chhath Puja special now runs between Rani Kamlapati and Hazrat Nizamuddin. The train features 22 LHB coaches, including two Second AC, three Third AC, six Economy Third AC, five Sleeper, four General, one SLRD and a generator car.
The Ministry of Railways has scheduled 6,181 special runs for October 28 to help workers return home after the holiday season. Across the country, more than 12,000 special trains currently operate, with over 900 extra journeys planned for the next few days to ease the festival rush.
Chhath Puja, celebrated not only in India but also in parts of Nepal and among Indian communities worldwide, honors the Sun God’s energy and expresses gratitude for family well‑being and purity. With these rail upgrades, travelers can head home to this important festival with fewer obstacles and more comfort.
