In North Bengal, BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh and MP Khagen Murmu were attacked while delivering flood‑relief supplies in Nagrakata on October 7. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar blasted the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for what he calls a state‑sponsored attack, saying that the biggest strike on elected officials would not happen without Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s knowledge.
Majumdar told that the assault on his party leaders shows West Bengal has lost its democratic footing. “Our MLA, MP and the state leaders were targeted while the BJP was doing relief work,” he said. “It feels like TMC is turning politics into a way to silence dissent.” He also accused TMC of creating chaos by settling Rohingya refugees in the state and claimed the attack was pre‑planned to hurt TMC’s standing before elections.
The driver of the vehicle, Sameer Barman, described the scene: “Stone pelting started as soon as we reached the area. Our vehicle was damaged, and we had to flee under fire.” Ghosh and Murmu were among those inside the vehicle who were subjected to the attack.
Mamata Banerjee has called for calm, stressing that the government will not let law and order deteriorate. She said the Chief Minister’s team has visited flood‑affected areas with hundreds of vehicles to provide food, clothing and shelter, not to push any political agenda. Banerjee told reporters that she had asked the Director General of Police to investigate the incident and urged residents to stay peaceful.
The West Bengal opposition leader, Suvendu Adhikari, also slammed the state chief minister. He accused her of orchestrating the violence and sending TMC supporters to block the BJP’s relief work. Adhikari said the attack on Ghosh’s vehicle and the injuries suffered by Murmu were deliberate attempts to intimidate opponents.
With West Bengal still grappling with severe flooding and landslides, the incident has raised fresh concerns about safety for political workers in disaster‑hit areas. Citizens and political parties alike are urging the state to shield relief volunteers and ensure that political rivalry does not interfere with humanitarian efforts.
