Shiv Sena said on Tuesday that Congress’s decision to run alone in the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections is a “suicidal” move. The party insists that opposition unity is the only way to stop the BJP from dominating the polls.
In a statement released through the party’s newspaper Saamana, Shiv Sena warned that a united front is needed to counter the BJP’s plan to “hijack the election system through hooliganism, mob rule, excessive use of money and police force.” The party called the BJP’s tactics a threat to Mumbai’s link with Maharashtra and promised that the state will not tolerate any attempt to split the Marathi public.
The Shiv Sena message focused on the danger of a split vote. It said that if Congress contests the BMC polls on its own, voters from North India and the Muslim community could pull away, weakening the opposition. The party argued that Marathi voters, who have historically supported the Maha Vikas Aghadi, would stay loyal if the opposition acts together.
The editorial also highlighted that Muslims backed Maha Vikas Aghadi in the last Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. It pledged that Uddhav Thackeray’s support during the coronavirus period helped win Muslim votes, and that Shiv Sena remains confident that the community will vote for the alliance again.
Shiv Sena questioned Congress’s ability to secure the full support of North Indians, Hindi‑speaking voters and Muslims if it runs alone. “If you choose to fight separately in Mumbai, what about the other 27 municipal corporations?” the article asked. “Maharashtra’s interest lies in a united Marathi vote against the BJP.”
The party urged Congress to drop its “flip‑flops” and focus on the interests of Mahrashtra’s people rather than national party politics. Shiv Sena recalled the unity that prevailed in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections and cautioned that postponing the struggle won’t help the opposition.
In short, Shiv Sena’s appeal to Congress stresses that a united Maharashtra front is the only way to keep the BJP from winning the BMC elections and to protect the city’s diverse communities.
