Congress leader KC Venugopal has demanded quick action from Union Home Minister Amit Shah against a BJP spokesperson in Kerala. Venugopal claims the official made a shocking death threat against Rahul Gandhi during a live TV debate.
In a letter sent Sunday, Venugopal targeted BJP’s Printu Mahadev. He says Mahadev declared on News18 Kerala’s broadcast that “Rahul Gandhi will be shot in the chest.” Venugopal calls this a deliberate incitement to violence, not just a slip-up. “This is a cold, calculated, and chilling death threat against the Leader of the Opposition and one of India’s top political figures,” he wrote.
The Congress general secretary warns that ignoring this could look like the government is okaying attacks on opposition leaders. He stresses it endangers not just Gandhi’s safety but also India’s Constitution and rule of law. “Such poisonous words from a ruling party spokesperson put Rahul Gandhi’s life at risk and weaken the security every citizen deserves,” Venugopal added in the letter, which he also shared on X (formerly Twitter).
Venugopal points out that political fights should stay within democratic bounds. But he accuses BJP leaders of resorting to death threats on live TV, especially since Rahul Gandhi’s strong stand against RSS-BJP ideas seems to have rattled them. He references repeated warnings from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) about threats to Gandhi’s safety, including one letter sent to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
This isn’t an isolated rant from a low-level party member, Venugopal argues. He sees it as part of a bigger pattern of hate that could spark real violence against the Lok Sabha opposition leader. “Failure to act fast and publicly will be seen as complicity—a license for more attacks and a betrayal of your role as Home Minister,” he told Shah.
Venugopal urges immediate police action through Kerala’s state forces to deliver swift justice. The call highlights growing concerns over political violence in India, especially amid tensions between Congress and BJP.
