Congress leader Supriya Shrinate has fired sharp criticism at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his push for Swadeshi, calling it hypocritical. Speaking to on Thursday, she pointed out that while Modi champions Indian-made goods, he surrounds himself with foreign products from head to toe.
“PM Modi talks big about Swadeshi, but check out his own stuff—it’s all imported,” Shrinate said. She highlighted his Italian-Bulgarian spectacles, German Montblanc pen, Swiss Movado watch, and American Kenneth Cole shoes. Even his rides, like BMW and Mercedes cars, and the American aircraft he flies in, aren’t homegrown, she added.
Shrinate didn’t stop there. She slammed Modi’s ministers, claiming their kids study at top foreign universities, settle abroad, and make big money overseas. “Why not call them all back to India to support Swadeshi?” she asked. “Everyone around Modi is settled in foreign countries. The way he dresses, flies, and uses things—it’s all foreign. Talking Swadeshi from his mouth just looks bad. Remember, Mr. Modi, hypocrisy has its limits.”
On the other side, Prime Minister Modi doubled down on boosting indigenous production during his speech. He stressed that India needs a full Swadeshi economy to fuel its growth. The government stands ready to back businesses every step of the way, he said.
Modi spotlighted the Make in India initiative, aiming to produce everything from chips to ships right here at home. “We’re making it easier to do business by scrapping over 40,000 compliances and decriminalizing more than 1,000 laws,” he told business leaders and traders. “We’re right there with you, shoulder to shoulder.”
Speaking at the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show-2025 in New Delhi, Modi urged no shortcuts on Indian-made quality. “Every citizen is embracing Swadeshi—proudly say, ‘Garv se kaho hum Swadeshi hai.’ Our traders must own this mantra too,” he declared.
