Tamil Nadu BJP leader Vinoj P Selvam slammed actor and TVK chief Vijay on Sunday for skipping a visit to Karur after a deadly stampede at the politician’s rally. The tragic incident in Karur, Tamil Nadu, claimed 39 lives, including women and children, during Vijay’s event on Saturday, leaving many others injured and fighting for life.
In a sharp post on X, formerly Twitter, Selvam highlighted how leaders from other parties rushed to Karur overnight to comfort grieving families and check on the wounded. But Vijay, he pointed out, drove from Karur to Trichy, flew to Chennai, and then headed home to Panaiyur without any sign of involvement. “He’s acting like the Tamil Nadu stampede has nothing to do with him,” Selvam wrote, questioning Vijay’s fitness to lead the state’s vibrant youth. “Have you really accepted someone like this as their leader? Shame!”
Selvam’s criticism comes amid growing scrutiny over accountability in the wake of the Karur rally tragedy, which has shocked Tamil Nadu and drawn widespread condolences.
Meanwhile, VCK president and MP Thol Thirumavalavan voiced his heartbreak over the Karur stampede while speaking to reporters at Chennai airport on his way to the site. “This loss of 39 lives, including innocents, is heartbreaking. Many more are in intensive care battling to survive,” he said. Thirumavalavan called on the Tamil Nadu government to boost compensation for victims’ families and ensure top-notch medical care for the injured. He also shared his deepest sympathies with those affected.
