Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin shared his deep sadness on Wednesday over the death of senior IAS officer Dr. Beela Venkatesan. The 56-year-old former Health Secretary passed away in Chennai after battling a long illness.
In a heartfelt message, Stalin called her passing a shocking loss. “I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of the Secretary of the Energy Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu, Dr. Beela Venkatesan, IAS,” he said.
Stalin praised her impressive career. A doctor by training, she joined the Indian Administrative Service and took on key roles across government departments. She shone as Tamil Nadu’s Health Secretary during the tough COVID-19 pandemic, guiding the state through one of its biggest challenges. Her calm updates in daily media briefings won her widespread respect.
The chief minister offered his sympathies to her family and colleagues. “I extend my deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to her bereaved family members and to the senior officials of the government who are grieving her loss,” he added.
Dr. Beela Venkatesan, a 1997-batch IAS officer, left a strong mark on public service in Tamil Nadu. She was the daughter of former Director General of Police L.N. Venkatesan and ex-MLA Rani Venkatesan. After earning her MBBS from Madras Medical College, she dedicated her career to efficient and committed work in various government positions.
Her body is now at her home in Kottivakkam on Chennai’s East Coast Road for public viewing.
