Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has made a direct appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to step in and fix the fertiliser shortage hitting the state’s farmers. On Tuesday, Stalin highlighted that despite a bumper paddy season thanks to good rains, the state has only received 57% of its allocated fertilisers so far.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Stalin pointed out how the increased paddy cultivation this year demands more support. He stressed that getting fertilisers on time is key to keeping farmers’ momentum going amid the favourable monsoon. “Hon’ble PM Thiru @narendramodi, despite increased paddy coverage, Tamil Nadu has received only 57 per cent of its allocated fertilisers. I request your urgent intervention to supply the shortfall and to allot additional quantities for September to avoid disruption to farmers, ensuring that the momentum of a good monsoon is not lost,” he wrote.
Sharing his detailed letter to the PM, Stalin reminded everyone that Tamil Nadu stands as a major paddy-producing state in India. The region runs special schemes tailored to local farming needs, but right now, fertiliser manufacturers aren’t delivering enough. Specifically, supplies of Urea, DAP, MOP, and NPK Complex fertilisers have fallen short of the central government’s plan.
Stalin broke it down: The state needs an immediate supply of 27,823 metric tonnes (MT) of Urea, 15,831 MT of DAP, 12,422 MT of MOP, and 98,623 MT of NPK Complex to catch up. He urged the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers to push manufacturers to deliver these right away.
Looking ahead, with bright prospects for the Kharif 2025 and Rabi 2025 seasons, Stalin also asked for extra allocations in September: 40,000 MT of Urea, 20,000 MT of DAP, 20,000 MT of MOP, and 40,000 MT of NPK Complex. This move, he said, would help Tamil Nadu’s agriculture thrive without any hitches.
Farmers in Tamil Nadu are counting on quick action to boost their yields and make the most of this season’s opportunities.
