A bomb threat was sent by e‑mail to the Madurai police department this morning, claiming a bomb had been planted in the Meenakshi Amman Temple, officials say. The message triggered a full‑scale security response that swept the historic temple complex in the city of Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Madurai’s Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the most visited religious sites in India, drawing thousands of devotees from across the country every day. Today was especially busy, as students were on exam break and Pradosham, a major festival day, was being celebrated. The influx of worshippers put even more pressure on local security forces.

City police called in the Bomb Disposal Unit and sniffer dogs to conduct a thorough search. Teams examined the goddess’s sanctum, the shrine of Lord Swami, the golden flag mast area, the free‑meal hall (Annadhanam), and the temple’s large tank (Teppakulam). They also checked all four gopuram towers, the main entrances, the mobile‑phone deposit counter, and coconut stalls outside the main gate. In addition, the footwear storage and surrounding yards were inspected.

After about three hours, police officers confirmed that no explosives were found. The bomb threat turned out to be a hoax, the Madurai City Police declared. Authorities urged the public to remain calm and stay away from the gates during the investigation.

The incident highlights the ongoing vigilance required around major religious sites in India. It also reassured devotees that the temple’s security teams are ready to address any potential threats, keeping the Meenakshi Amman Temple safe for future celebrations.
