In Thiruvananthapuram, police arrested a Tamil Nadu‑born lorry driver for a violent crime at a women’s hostel in Kazhakkoottam. The accused, Benjamin, confessed to the assault after police brought him in from Madurai.
The 25‑year‑old IT professional was sleeping in her hostel room when Benjamin, who has a history of theft, broke in. He allegedly gagged the woman, threatened her with death if she screamed, and assaulted her before escaping. The victim woke early, alerted neighbors and filed a complaint with Kazhakkoottam police.
Because the hostel lacked its own CCTV cameras, investigators used footage from nearby streets and tracked the suspect’s vehicle. The footage captured Benjamin’s lorry taking a break after the crime and his argument with service staff that led to his fleeing. The evidence helped police locate and arrest him in Madurai during a joint operation with Tamil Nadu authorities.
Benjamin had reportedly lied about his identity and tried to escape after the assault, but police eventually apprehended him. He has a record of theft in his past trips to Kerala.
A special investigative team, including officers from three police stations and the City D‑Squad, worked to close the case quickly. The police received the first police report on the morning of October 17 and have since issued a notice to hostels near Technopark, urging better CCTV coverage and stronger security, especially in women’s dorms.
This incident highlights the need for improved safety and surveillance for young professionals staying in hostels across Thiruvananthapuram.
