A fireworks factory in Virudhunagar district, Tamil Nadu, blew up on Oct. 11, just days before Diwali. The plant, licensed by Nagpur, has more than 200 workers in over 100 rooms.
Near the busy fireworks hub of Sivakasi, a blast broke out while the crew was finishing a batch of fancy type fireworks. Workers were mixing chemicals when friction sparked a fire in one room.
Thanks to a swift evacuation, no one was hurt, although two rooms suffered damage. Firefighters from Sivakasi arrived quickly and put the blaze out. The local police are now investigating the incident.
The explosion comes as India’s Supreme Court is weighing whether to ease a ban on green firecrackers in the Delhi‑NCR region for Diwali. On Friday, the court said it would decide on the request to lift the outright ban. For now, the ban can be relaxed during Diwali under the court’s notice.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, speaking for Delhi and Haryana, urged the court to allow green firecrackers to be fired between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Diwali, 11 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and for one hour on Gurpurab. He proposed a balanced plan: regular checks by PESO and NEERI, limited sale of approved green crackers, and strict licensing of traders and manufacturers.
The court’s decision will shape how fireworks are used during India’s biggest festival.
