In New Delhi on Monday, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju blasted RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav after the youngster said his new government would scrap the Waqf Amendment Act.
Rijiju slammed Yadav’s comments as immature and a ploy to win Muslim votes ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections.
Yadav, who has been a front‑line face for the Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, claimed that if his party wins, he would “dump” the Waqf Board law bill. He added that once he becomes chief minister, he would make Biharis “chinta mukt” (free of worries) by tackling bad schools, high poverty and migration. Yadav blamed “20 years of stagnation” on the ruling NDA and stressed his dream of turning Bihar into a top state.
In response, Rijiju said it was shocking that Yadav, who still calls himself a chief‑minister hopeful, didn’t understand that state governments cannot override Parliament’s laws. “Even a person who thinks he can crush a parliamentary act is showing a lack of constitutional knowledge,” the minister said. He added that people in Bihar and across India had noticed Yadav’s remarks and were laughing at his ignorance.
Rijiju accused Yadav of desperation, saying the leader would say anything to earn votes. “He knows nothing about the law. He’s telling voters he’ll toss a parliamentary act into the dustbin just to attract the Muslim vote,” Rijiju said. The union minister reiterated that no state can deny a law passed by Parliament, reminding listeners that all laws apply nationwide and cannot be undone by a state government.
He also challenged opposition leaders Tejashwi Yadav and Rahul Gandhi, asking whether they could justify ignoring Parliament and the Supreme Court if they want to stay in power. Rijiju warned that the children of “a few families” who see themselves above the law are being watched by the nation.
Rijiju accused the opposition of “appeasement politics” leading up to the Bihar elections. He said Congress and RJD have historically ruled by deceiving Muslims and creating a vote bank. In contrast, he claimed that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the country will progress and all communities, including minorities, will feel safe.
The minister concluded that Muslims will gradually see that India’s growth relies on Modi’s leadership and that all citizens—whether majority or minority—will benefit under his government.
