Hyderabad, Oct 15 – A fresh wave of candidates filed papers for the January 11 by‑poll in the Jubilee Hills Assembly seat, bringing the total nominations to 33 over the past week.
The returning officer, P. Sairam, announced that 12 candidates came forward on Wednesday, nine of them independents. Among them was Maganti Sunitha, representing the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). She and her running mates submitted two sets of nomination forms at the Shaikpet MRO office, with senior BRS leader K. T. Rama Rao in attendance.
Sunitha’s entry follows the death of her husband, Maganti Gopinath, who won the seat three times in 2023. Gopinath died of a cardiac arrest on June 8, creating a vacancy that the state must fill. In the last election, he topped the leaderboard, defeating former cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin of Congress by 16,337 votes.
Congress has chosen Naveen Yadav as its candidate, while the BJP is backing Lankala Deepak Reddy again—he finished third in the 2023 poll. Yadav is expected to file his papers by Thursday.
The deadline for nominations is October 21. Scrutiny of papers will take place on October 22, and candidates can still withdraw until October 24. Voting will run on November 11, and the count is scheduled for November 14.
Election officials are boosting voter awareness through the SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) program. Digital displays have been set up at major junctions in Panjagutta and Khairatabad, reminding residents of the upcoming poll.
R. V. Karnan, Hyderabad District Election Officer, said: “These vibrant displays keep the public aware and help strengthen democracy by encouraging informed, responsible voting.”
