Telangana Assembly Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar will start the second round of a disqualification trial on Monday, Nov 6. The hearing follows petitions filed by the Bharath Rashtra Samithi (BRS) that seek to remove four of its lawmakers who allegedly defected to the ruling Congress party.
The trial, which follows the Tenth Schedule of India’s Constitution, will run on Nov 6, 7, 12 and 13. Each session will last from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in an in‑camera setting, meaning the public will not attend.
The four MLAs facing disqualification are:
- Dr. Sanjay Kumar (Jagtial)
- Pocharam Srinivas Reddy (Banswada)
- Tellam Venkata Rao (Bhadrachalam)
- Arekapudi Gandhi (Serilingampally)
During these hearings the Speaker will cross‑examine counsel representing the petitioners and the law‑wrapping members, and vice versa. The proceedings will be conducted in an open‑court style, but the judgments will remain confidential until announced.
This marks the first time the Telangana Assembly Speaker has opened a disqualification case. The first batch of four MLAs—T Prakash Goud, Kale Yadaiah, Gudem Mahipal Reddy and Bandla Krishnamohan Reddy—were heard on 29 Sept, 1 Oct and 24 Oct.
The summons come after the Supreme Court tightened the timeline. On 31 July the apex court told the Assembly Speaker to finish all disqualification hearings within three months. That deadline expired on 31 Oct, but the Speaker has asked the Supreme Court for a brief extension. Meanwhile, two defected MLAs—Danam Nagender and Kadiyam Srihari—remain without replies to the Speaker’s notices, citing more time.
All eyes are on this week’s trial as Telangana politics watches whether the Supreme Court’s intervention—and the Speaker’s handling of the cases—will set a new precedent for party defections in India.
