Heavy Rains Hit Hyderabad: Waterlogging and Alerts Grip the City
Hyderabad woke up to heavy downpours on Thursday, turning streets in areas like Khairatabad and MS Maqta into flooded zones. The rains caused major headaches for locals, with waterlogging slowing down traffic and disrupting daily life, city officials reported.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns of more wet weather ahead. Expect cloudy skies in Hyderabad over the next 48 hours, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers, plus gusty winds blowing at 30-40 kmph. Mornings and nights could see misty or hazy conditions too.
IMD has sounded a yellow alert for the entire Telangana state. On September 18 and 19, thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds might strike isolated spots in all districts. The alert continues on September 20 for key areas like Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak, Kamareddy, Mahabubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, and Jogulamba Gadwal. By September 21, it covers every district as the rainy spell hangs on.
This isn’t the first scare from the rains. Just days ago, on September 14, heavy showers in Hyderabad’s Habeeb Nagar swept away two people—Arjun (26) and Rama (25)—around 9 pm. The duo hasn’t been found yet, despite strong water flows in the area. Police from Habeeb Nagar station jumped into action, sending three Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams for search and rescue. They’re still working hard amid the tough conditions.
Even as the rains pounded the city, Hyderabad Traffic Police stepped up big time. They deployed teams everywhere to tackle jams, help stranded drivers, and pump out water from flooded roads. "Our officers stayed on duty non-stop, managing traffic at busy spots, teaming up with GHMC and HYDRAA for quick cleanups, and handling emergency calls fast," the police said in a statement. They also thanked residents for staying patient. "Hyderabad Traffic Police is always here for your safety," they added.
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy isn’t taking chances. He ordered officials to speed up flood relief work and asked the state team to request funds from the central government. The goal? Boost emergency responses and help rebuild in rain-hit zones.
Stay safe if you’re in Hyderabad or Telangana—keep an eye on IMD updates for the latest on heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and yellow alerts.
