A flare of political violence erupted in Agartala on Tuesday when supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) allegedly struck the Trinamool Congress (TMC) office on Chitta Ranjan Road. The TMC headquarters was vandalised by a group of BJP voters, sparking an intense showdown in the city.
Police moved quickly after a handful of BJP workers approached the TMC office with hostile intent. Officers stepped in, broke up the confrontation and kept the situation from escalating further. No one was hurt, but damage was visible on the office’s front door and windows.
The attack occurred during a BJP rally that was held to protest what the party allege is an assault on BJP MP Khagen Murmu, a two‑time Member of Parliament from West Bengal. The rally, led by BJP district president Ashim Bhattacharjee and MLA Sushanta Deb, the party’s youth group chief, was meant to condemn the incident in North Bengal where Murmu was allegedly attacked.
While the rally was passing near the TMC office, a splinter group of BJP supporters broke away, smashed the office entrance, and set off a brief chaos. Police and security forces rushed to the scene and restored order. No injuries were reported, but the TMC office suffered visible property damage.
The TMC reacted strongly. Through a post on X (formerly Twitter), the party condemned the aggression, calling it “not an isolated act of aggression; it is an open assault on democracy.” The TMC said that the BJP’s “talk of saving democracy” while destroying offices proves only fear and moral bankruptcy. The party vowed that its workers and supporters would not be silenced and that the spirit of resistance would continue.
This incident shows the continued tension between the BJP and TMC in Tripura and highlights how party rivalries can quickly turn violent in India’s political landscape. Search terms such as “Agartala political violence,” “BJP attacks TMC office,” and “Tripura BJP rally” are likely to drive readers to this story.
