Agartala, Oct 24 – Trouble spread through Kamalpur, a sub‑division of Tripura’s Dhalai district, after a violent backlash from some Tiprasa Civil Society (TCS) activists during the state‑wide shutdown on Thursday. More than a dozen people, including district officials, a police officer and traders, were hurt when the protest erupted into attacks, arson and looting.
Security forces, including the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), rushed into the area. A police officer said a large contingent was on the scene and senior officials were watching the situation closely.
To stop the violence from worsening, Dhalai District Magistrate (DM) Vivek H.B. imposed a prohibitory order on Thursday night. Under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), the order denies people to gather in groups of more than four, to carry weapons or to incite hatred. It also forbids use of rooftops or premises for stone‑pelting, and restricts vehicle traffic in the banned zones.
Tripura’s Chief Minister, Manik Saha, who also manages the Home portfolio, flew to the Kamalpur market area. He held a meeting at Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital to check on the injured. He confirmed that 12 people were hurt, three of them now in the Agartala hospital and nine at Kamalpur Bimal Sinha Memorial Hospital.
Among those wounded were Salema Block Development Officer Abhijit Majumdar, engineer Animesh Saha, Sub‑Divisional Police Officer Samudra Debbarma and trader Biplab Deb. Saha told reporters that attackers wielded heavy bamboo sticks, iron rods and slingshots to target officials. He also said the protesters looted market stalls and stole gold chains from women. “This is a disgraceful act. The police will take stern action,” he promised.
BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee and former state and national leaders, including former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb, Congress veteran Sudip Roy Barman and opposition figure Jitendra Chaudhury, all condemned the violence.
The TCS protest was linked to a 24‑hour shutdown the group staged in support of an eight‑point demand that includes calling for the deportation of illegal migrants. Picketers, many carrying national flags, blockaded over 52 key roads and some railway tracks across Tripura, including West Tripura and Khowai districts.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) had to cancel or shorten nine trains on Thursday. Four express trains—Sabroom‑Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express, Chrmlali‑Agartala Express, Silchar‑Agartala Express and Agartala‑Silchar Express—along with five local trains were affected. NFR chief, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, said the rail blockade forced the railway to halt several major services, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.
The shutdown and the violence are part of a broader flare‑up in Tripura, with law enforcement and state officials working to restore order and protect people’s safety.
