Thiruvananthapuram – Senior Parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor criticized his own party on Friday, after first‑round vote counts showed a weak showing for the INDIA alliance in Bihar.
The report, released by , said Tharoor told reporters that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was now leading by a clear margin. “We should wait for the Election Commission to finish the results and then we can see what happened,” he told the press. “All parties – Congress, RJD, and others – have to analyse the numbers closely.”
Tharoor, who was not invited to campaign in Bihar, warned that a deeper look at the election is needed. “You have to look at the big picture – many factors influence an election. Let’s examine why we came out with these results. Those campaigning in the state know better than I do.” He added that the senior ally in Bihar was not the Congress.
The MP also criticised what he called “unfair“ perks given to women voters just before the Model Code of Conduct became active. “It’s legal, but do we want it? State governments have repeated this tactic in Maharashtra and elsewhere, handing benefits to certain groups.” He said the practice, he noted, has become a recurring problem.
The early numbers paint a bleak picture for the INDIA bloc. Media analyses indicate that Congress only won about five of the 61 seats it contested in Bihar. Many observers say the coalition’s performance is dragging down the overall alliance.
Tharoor’s remarks come at a time of growing frustration within the Congress, especially in states like Kerala where the party is fighting a tight battle against the CPI‑M and the BJP. His sharp comments on the party’s electoral strategy have sparked heat among supporters and colleagues alike.
