In New Delhi on Sunday, All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi fired back at Samajwadi Party MP Afzal Ansari after the MP challenged him to run in a seat where Muslims are a minority. Owaisi said the criticism shows a lack of understanding about how his party works on the ground.
Speaking to news agency , Owaisi explained that people in Hyderabad already see AIMIM as an inclusive party. He noted, “They think we only work for Muslims, but that’s wrong. I spend five days a week at my office with open doors. About half the people who visit are Hindu brothers and sisters, many of whom are Dalits.” Owaisi added that his party’s record includes MLAs who have taken steps like throwing newspapers in public spaces to reach every voter.
Owaisi said Afzal Ansari, who left the Communist Party to join Ekta Dal and later Me too, hasn’t seen this inclusive work. “If you read the Constitution, Article 14 guarantees equality before the law and the right to equality,” Owaisi said. “We strive to achieve that for everyone, not just one group.”
Ansari’s challenge was sparked by his long career in Uttar Pradesh politics. He says he has served as MLA five times and MP three times and that AIMIM has a similar number of MLAs nationwide. “Will Owaisi contest where Muslims make up only nine percent of the population, like in Ghazipur?” he asked. “I myself have done that, you can prove my strength.”
Owaisi has been campaigning in Bihar’s Seemanchal region, pointing to underdevelopment, discrimination and the collapse of education and health services. He warns rival parties call residents “infiltrators” and twists their attempts to lift the region.
He also criticized RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who called him an extremist. “Yadav’s words show hate, because he thinks people with beards and topis are extremists,” Owaisi said. “My people and I are watching closely.”
Owaisi’s remarks come as Indian politics increasingly focuses on minority rights, caste, and regional development. The conflict between AIMIM and other parties highlights the ongoing debate over representation and equality in the country.
