New Delhi – The Uttar Pradesh chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, used his speech at the Lord Ram coronation in Ramkatha Park to criticize Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav over his recent remarks about Diwali lights.
Yogi said that “the bright lamps that fill Ayodhya’s streets now give people hope.” He added that the diyas, made by local Prajapati and potter communities, show devotion and also help families earn a living—a point he says “Ram‑haters” can’t accept.
The comments came after Akhilesh questioned the need to spend large sums on diyas and candles during Diwali, comparing the festival’s lighting to Christmas displays around the world. “We should rethink what the government spends on Diwali lights and bring in more spectacular lighting,” Akhilesh told the press.
BJP leaders blasted the former chief minister’s remarks as disrespectful to Hindu traditions and Indian culture. “Akhilesh’s criticism of Diwali lamps reveals a mindset that rejects Sanatan Dharma,” said BJP spokesperson and MP Sudhanshu Trivedi. He warned that such views fit with the opposition’s “dark” ideology, which he claims seeks to undermine Indian heritage.
The backlash is stoked by growing tensions ahead of the Bihar elections, with BJP cadres quickly stepping in to defend Hindu festivals. The controversy is likely to intensify as political campaigns heat up.
